Hi, Jake! Thanks for joining us today. Tell us about your business. Who do you serve, how do you serve them, and what's the impact that your business and work makes?
Syrovex assists businesses in adopting AI with greater control, confidence, and measurable value. Our services are tailored to meet the needs of small and midsize businesses, as well as enterprise teams within a variety of sectors, including legal services, staffing, warehousing, and sales.
Our platform, OwlVigil, provides businesses with a comprehensive management solution for AI access, costs, policies, and usage across various models, applications, and workflows. It integrates seamlessly into existing systems, eliminating the need for customers to rebuild their applications or commit to a single AI provider. We also collaborate directly with customers and design partners to develop AI tools that address specific operational needs.
Our work enables teams to automate repetitive tasks, reduce manual effort, and enhance the transparency of AI spending and oversight. We combine shared infrastructure with practical business applications to help organizations move from AI experimentation to everyday use, freeing employees to focus on higher-value work. We have successfully completed four paid enterprise engagements, with every customer requesting broader deployments or deeper collaboration.
Tell us about the moment you finally felt like you went from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur.
For me, a significant moment occurred when someone paid for a product I had created. I began my entrepreneurial journey in middle school, and after successfully selling the business after high school, I was able to fund my college tuition. This experience rendered entrepreneurship tangible: I was responsible for delivering a product that was highly regarded by its customers.
Years later, after building infrastructure and leading teams at companies like Amazon and Shopify, starting Syrovex brought that feeling back. The most compelling validation came when our initial paying customers inquired about expanding the scope of our work. This was due to the trust they had already placed in us, based on our previous work.
In my professional opinion, entrepreneurship entails assuming responsibility for a customer's issue, fulfilling a commitment, and securing subsequent opportunities to demonstrate one's capabilities.
Describe the moment or period in your life/career that motivated you to make the entrepreneurial leap.
My motivation was built over 15 years of experience in engineering and leadership roles at prominent companies such as Amazon, Shopify, and Capital One. I have experience starting businesses, but my corporate career taught me how to build reliable systems, lead teams, and transform complex technical challenges into dependable products.
As AI adoption accelerated, I saw an opportunity that connected directly to my experience. Businesses were eager to adopt AI, but challenges around cost, access, and accountability emerged when managing it across providers, teams, and workflows. I aspired to address these issues by establishing a company of my own.
Attaining 35 years of age has made the decision more personal. I asked myself what I wanted to spend the next decade building. I was responsible for raising two young children, but I was also determined to pursue a career in a field that aligned with my values. I have decided to allocate a ten-year period for building a foundation, acquiring knowledge, and dedicating myself fully to the pursuit of entrepreneurship. Syrovex is the result of that decision.
Describe a tool, service, or software that has been a game-changer for your business. How does it contribute to your success?
AI coding tools like OpenAI's Codex have been a game-changer for Syrovex. They facilitate the rapid conversion of ideas and customer feedback into functional software, thereby augmenting our small team's capacity to build, test, and enhance our products.
My engineering background allows me to effectively utilize these tools, assess their outputs, and make informed architectural decisions while leveraging AI to streamline implementation, debugging, and documentation processes. This allows me to prioritize customer needs and the strategic direction of our products.
The most significant contribution is a more efficient learning cycle. We can test an idea, present it to a customer, and refine it based on real feedback. For a nascent business, the capacity to swiftly learn and adapt is instrumental in maximizing resource allocation and cultivating customer confidence.
We know that success is very often a non-linear path. Tell us about a failure, pivot point, or lesson that changed your course or direction and helped to get you where you are today.
A pivotal lesson I learned was the realization that a robust technical product does not inherently provide a compelling reason to purchase.
When I started Syrovex, I concentrated on the infrastructure businesses require to manage AI: access, costs, policies, and visibility. My engineering background enabled me to identify these issues with clarity. However, customer conversations revealed the necessity to link these capabilities to a pressing business issue.
This shift in our approach to the market was instrumental in our success. We initiated a collaborative approach with design partners, focusing on areas such as legal services, staffing, and warehousing. This initiative commenced with the identification of specific workflows where we could showcase our added value. Our platform served as the foundation, with customer needs informing both the features we developed and the manner in which we unveiled them.
The lesson learned was the importance of listening to customers before expanding the product. Today, I allocate a significant portion of my time to understanding how customers operate, identifying the factors that hinder their progress, and understanding the outcomes they are willing to pay for. This strategic shift has enabled us to successfully transform technical capabilities into lucrative engagements and valuable opportunities for growth.
What unconventional strategy did you employ that significantly impacted your business?
We successfully transitioned potential customers into product development partners. Instead of introducing our AI infrastructure platform independently, we collaborated with businesses in legal services, staffing, and warehousing to solve specific workflow problems, using our platform as the foundation.
These partners contributed industry expertise, real operating needs, and feedback. We have the engineering capability to build solutions with them. The unconventional part was treating those engagements as both customer relationships and opportunities to discover products we could eventually offer to similar businesses.
This strategy enabled us to secure five signed design partners and complete four paid enterprise engagements, with every customer requesting broader deployments or deeper collaboration. The project yielded revenue, practical product feedback, and a clearer understanding of where our technology delivers value.
What’s something you wish you knew sooner that you’d give as advice for aspiring or newer entrepreneurs?
In retrospect, it would have been beneficial to recognize earlier that the development of the product and the growth of the business necessitate equal dedication. As an engineer, my initial inclination was to address issues by creating additional structures. However, another feature rarely provides the most comprehensive answers: Who needs this urgently? The question of who will pay for it remains unanswered. What is your strategy for reaching them?
It is advisable to consult with potential customers before feeling fully prepared. Inquire about their current approach to problem management, the associated costs, and the factors that would motivate a change in that strategy. It is essential to prioritize commitments, such as remuneration for pilots, access to a genuine workflow, or the time spent testing, rather than merely soliciting feedback.
It is not necessary to demonstrate the entirety of your vision on the first day. Begin by addressing a problem you can solve effectively, building trust with a customer, and leveraging that experience to inform your subsequent actions.
