Hi, Wendy Votroubek! Thanks for joining us today. Tell us about your business. Who do you serve, how do you serve them, and what's the impact that your business and work makes?
Integrity is a team of over 20 legal nurses who serve civil and criminal defense attorneys nationwide. Many legal cases involve complex medical data that can be impossible to interpret without years of clinical expertise. Our nurses partner with attorneys to help them understand what the data means—then use it to strategically improve their case outcomes, from increasing civil settlement value to ensuring innocent people aren’t punished for a crime they didn’t commit.
Our services include:
Merit Screens that assess case viability.
Reasonableness of Charges Reports that evaluate whether injury-related medical bills are fair based on geographic considerations.
Medical Cost Projection Reports that identify future care needs for civil clients.
Timelines that highlight case strengths, weaknesses, and a client’s physical, emotional, and financial suffering, which can be used to strengthen arguments.
Testifying Expert Support, including locating and vetting experts for niche cases.
Unlike many legal nurse consultants who leave direct patient care, most of our nurses remain clinically-active. We also hire the most experienced nursing experts, including forensic and critical care nurses, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners for adult and pediatric cases, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. That’s why attorneys are confident they can count on us to support their most complex cases.
Tell us about the moment you finally felt like you went from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur.
When I started my business, another legal nurse wished me luck, and in the same breath, warned me that most legal nurses never make a living. I vowed to myself to prove her wrong. I joined a small business coaching group and met mentors who believed in me. This made all the difference in the world. While I marketed my services from the beginning, it wasn’t until I started attending in-person events that I grew the repeat client and referral network that continues to sustain my business to this day. I’m so grateful to those mentors who saw my drive from the getgo, and encouraged me to keep going even when doubt crept in. I took their words to heart, and it paid off.
Describe the moment or period in your life/career that motivated you to make the entrepreneurial leap.
Before starting Integrity, I was laid off twice. After one of those layoffs—33 years into my nursing career—I decided it was time to reinvent myself and start a legal nurse consulting business. I was honestly terrified, but took the opportunity anyway to challenge myself and learn new skills.
Describe a tool, service, or software that has been a game-changer for your business. How does it contribute to your success?
Monday.com allows us to systematize case management, track key performance indicators, and manage client notes and communications in one place. For email marketing, we love MailerLite because it’s affordable and has advanced automation and design capabilities. I love that my whole team can access both platforms with their own logins, which keeps us on the same page.
We know that success is very often a non-linear path. Tell us about a failure, pivot point, or lesson that changed your course or direction and helped to get you where you are today.
I tried to do it all and grow my business on my own for a long time. It was stressful and isolating at times, and eventually I realized scaling wasn’t possible without help. I hired other experts who empowered me to zoom out and approach my business more strategically.
In addition to my wonderful nurses, my team includes:
A bookkeeper who tracks my expenses and earnings
A fractional chief financial officer who has transformed the way I approach my business’ finances
A virtual assistant who keeps meetings on track and our CRM up to date
An business coach who helps me see the bigger picture
An operations manager who partners with me on exhibitions, client relationships, and everyday business tasks
A marketing manager who ensures our message and visual brand is consistent and engaging across platforms
One of the hardest things for entrepreneurs is giving up control. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my team. We empower each other to thrive.
What unconventional strategy did you employ that significantly impacted your business?
We mail personalized, handwritten notes to introduce ourselves to leads and new clients, and to thank repeat clients for choosing us. We’ve found that in our digital world, handwritten notes stand out and help us build meaningful relationships.
Beyond this, hiring a business coach has been essential to seeing past my blind spots. Owning a business can be a lonely journey, but my coach helps me stay the course and dream bigger.
What’s something you wish you knew sooner that you’d give as advice for aspiring or newer entrepreneurs?
Join a business group, ideally one with in-person meetings and events. Connecting with fellow business owners not only grows your referral network, it gives you a community that will celebrate your wins and support you through challenges.
A few of my favorites are:
Business Network International: Empowers you to grow your referral network through weekly chapter meetings where you’ll share about your business and build relationships.
Entrepreneurs’ Organization: A wonderful way of connecting with other entrepreneurs through small, peer-to-peer forums, member-led groups that align with your goals, and in-person events around the world.
National Association for the Self-Employed: A valuable resource for grants, scholarships, healthcare options, and expert guidance on everything from business strategy and marketing to accounting and legal matters.
SCORE: Free, one-on-one mentoring from experienced business professionals, plus access to workshops and templates.
