Unconventional Success: How Lisa Anderson’s Bold Strategy Redefined Wellness Apps

Lisa Virginia Anderson is redefining how we value invisible labor with InvisiBILL — Anxiety Receipts, a playful yet profound app that assigns a monetary value to often-overlooked relational tasks. In this Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur Spotlight, Lisa shares her journey from frustration to innovation, using AI to highlight the mental load that keeps our lives running smoothly. Her story is a testament to embracing unconventionality and the power of starting without permission. Through humor and insight, Lisa is transforming wellness by turning the mundane into moments of recognition and appreciation.
Hi, Lisa! Thanks for joining us today. Tell us about your business. Who do you serve, how do you serve them, and what's the impact that your business and work makes?
InvisiBILL — Anxiety Receipts is a subversive, consumer-facing wellness app (currently available on the Apple App Store and Google Play), that uses the power of AI to assign a quantifiable dollar value to "mental load" and the invisible/relational labor that keep relationships, teams, friend groups, and families functioning. The app turns unappreciated relational tasks (like planning a group trip, or cleaning up the cat pee, or re-writing a co-worker's email) into billable line items and then generates playful invoices that can be sent out with a request for "payment" however the user requests e.g. "you can cover my shift next time" or "just a thank you would be nice!" The invoices do not have to be sent out and can also be maintained privately for a user as documentation and proof of their own value. The app is lighthearted and satirical on the surface-level, but underneath there is a very serious point about how important and affirming it can be to name and value the little things that we often take for granted, particularly viewed through the lens of mental health, anxiety, and burnout.
Tell us about the moment you finally felt like you went from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur.
I think this is a really interesting question as we often assume that there will be one particular moment that feels like "aha I made it!, now I can relax," but I think that every time I have achieved a particular goal or milestone, I just keep looking towards the next one.
Describe the moment or period in your life/career that motivated you to make the entrepreneurial leap.
I get into this particular story in detail in the podcast, so I don't want to spoil it here, but essentially it was a moment of rage and frustration that I felt none of the chore-division apps or wellness apps in the marketplace even scratched the surface of the much larger structural issue around providing tools to discuss and value this invisible/relational labor. Also, mild *spoiler* the actual story does involve someone playing computer games and someone else having to come home from work and clean up the cat pee on the rug (again!).
Describe a tool, service, or software that has been a game-changer for your business. How does it contribute to your success?
AI. I know it's such a broad category, but the ability to even imagine quantifying the types of tasks that we're discussing in invisible/relational labor is due to AI.
We know that success is very often a non-linear path. Tell us about a failure, pivot point, or lesson that changed your course or direction and helped to get you where you are today.
There have been so many it's hard to put my finger on just one, frankly, but I like to re-frame every setback as a new opportunity for learning and growth.
What unconventional strategy did you employ that significantly impacted your business?
My entire company and the concept of the app is so unconventional, that I can't answer this as simply one moment of strategy. I think that's the entire point of disruption. I mean, the InvisiBILL - Anxiety Receipts app literally sends out hyper-specific, hot pink invoices in a space that traditionally is filled only with soft, surface-level affirmations and notes of gratitude!
What’s something you wish you knew sooner that you’d give as advice for aspiring or newer entrepreneurs?
You don't need anyone's permission to start building. Just start.
